FLETCH REBOOT finds its writer in David Mandel

Movie by

Earlier we reported that Warner Bros. was planning a Fletch reboot. According to THR, David Mandel is in talks to write the script. Mandel was a writer-producer on Seinfeld and one of the writers on Sacha Baron Cohen's upcoming comedy The Dictator. The reboot will be based on the Gregory McDonald mystery novels about center on a reporter named I.M. Fletcher (played by Chevy Chase in the original films), who juggles writing exposes while avoiding headaches caused by his two ex-wives. Anonymous Content's Steve Golin and Michael Sugar are producing along with David List, the manager of McDonald's estate.

At this time we do not have any new plot details about the film, but we do know it will not be a remake of the first two films. The reboot is a high priority for the studio and is planned as "a smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies." Reportedly, Mandel was chosen over a number of high-profile writers for the gig.

Mandel also worked with Larry David as an executive producer and director on Curb Your Enthusiasm. He also co-wrote and co-directed the DreamWorks comedy Eurotrip. I have heard funny things about The Dictator, and think that Mandel has a great comedic mind. I don't know how I feel about a reboot fo the franchise, but I do think Mandel is a good choice to write it.
