Big Name Directors Band Together to Fight Premium VOD Distribution

Several respected directors along with Brett Ratner and Michael Bay have banded together to protest the trend of distributing films to the home early through premium video on demand. What is their means of protest, you ask? An open letter!

Yes, the same method used by obsessive fans to save their favorite TV show from cancelation is being employed by actual Hollywood filmmakers. The aforementioned missive, which may be read here, details just how important maintaining the current 132-day theatrical release window is.  The group that signed the letter feels that bringing “pristine, digital copies” of new films into the home will both increase piracy and cannibalize movie ticket sales.

Kathryn Bigelow, James Cameron, Todd Phillips, Peter Jackson and Robert Zemeckis are just a few of the names you’ll find at the bottom of the letter. Do you agree with them that this new distribution model will hurt the industry?
