E3 2011: Details revealed about HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED ANNIVERSARY

Games E3 by

New details have been revealed about Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary during Microsoft's "Best of E3" Showcase event. The game not only looks great, but sounds amazing thanks to the many hours spent at Skywalker Sound.

The game features a "Classic Mode", which will allow players to switch between the new and improved version to the original look and feel from the original Xbox. This was initially planned as a menu item, but the designers changed it to being accessible from the click of a button. It will really shock gamers to see how far the game has truly come.

The game will run two engines at once, with the classic engine and a graphical engine to allow for the uprezzed visuals. 343 Industries teamed with Austin-based Certain Affinity to build the new version of the game. The multiplayer aspect of the game is being desinged by Saber Interactive, which will use the Halo: Reach engine. The two engines will allow for extremely upgraded multiplayer maps, with the abilities such as jetpacks and armor lock as well. This is a feature that was not available in the original.

Terminals are back and have been retrofitted into Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. There is no text that players will have to read like in Halo 3. Instead, there is full-motion video narrated by Guilty Spark. This will likely fill out the story of the Halo universe, and ma lead us into Halo 4.

Here are some more details from G4:

  • The game is disc-based, although 343 is "exploring other distributuon options."
  • The game will retail for $39.99.
  • Halo Waypoint will be integrated with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and there will be some secrets revealed there.
  • When asked about the possibility of the same treatment for Halo 2, a 343 spokesman said "That's a good question... which I will be evasive on! Right now we're really excited to be talking about Halo: Combat Evolved."
  • The game will "ship with seven maps," including one Firefight map, but you can probably expect more via DLC.
  • The extremely overpowered Magnum pistol is making a triumphant return.
  • There are more secrets yet to come, and those will be revealed over the next few months, including at 343's "Halo Fest" in Seattle, which runs during PAX East.
