Kodi Smit-McPhee joins ROMEO AND JULIET

Movie by

Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, Let Me In) is currently in talks to join Carlo Carlei's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. He would play the role of Benvolio and would star opposite Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet. Holly Hunter has signed on to play Juliet's Nurse, and Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) is set for the role of Tybalt. Benvolio is Romeo's cousin who unsuccessfully tries to keep the peace between Tybalt and Mercutio, who has yet to be cast.

The script was written by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park). He will also produce along with former New Line execs Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky, as well as Gabriele Muccino. Filming is slated to begin in Italy this summer. Audiences will see Smit-McPhee in Ari Folman's The Congress as Robin Wright's son, as well as the voice of LAIKA in Focus Features animated film ParaNorman.

I liked him in The Road, but loved him in Let Me In. He will be a perfect fit for Romeo and Juliet. What are your thoughts on this casting news?
