SDCC 2011: PACIFIC RIM Logo and Guillermo Del Toro Discusses the Film
As you all know by down, after Universal Pictures passed up on Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness, he moved right over to another big monster film project for Legendary Pictures called Pacific Rim which he is gearing up to start shooting.
The cast of the film includes Idris Elba,Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, who all showed up to Comic-Con for the films panel with Del Toro, and writer Travis Beacham. There really wasn't anything revealed at the panel, no concept art, just the logo that you see above. Of course Del Toro talked about the film confirming that Rinko Kikuchi has been officially cast, and that more casting news is on the way.
Up until this point the only thing we had to go off of was this short plot summary, "Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace." Del Toro went into a little more detail and through the tool of his fucking buzz words managed to spark more excitement in the crowd for the film.
It is my duty to film the finest fucking monsters ever committed to the screen. And the greatest fucking robots ever committed to screen. That’s a pledge... Giant fucking monsters against giant fucking robots... incredibly huge things destroy little things.
He then goes on to discuss a few more elements of the film, saying that there was something that just made everything click, but he couldn't talk about what that was. He went on to praise Legendary for their commitment to the project and letting him do what needed to be done, letting him cast
... the perfect fucking actors for the role. To make a movie with this size and this scope and be able to cast with the greatest fucking actors is a dream come true.
The director went on to say,
There’s much more to it than the giant monsters and giant robots. We want to make it a big... what if: what would happen in the real world if a big twenty-five story thing came out of the sea and started destroying cities? How would the world change? What weapons do we need to develop to fight a thing like that? It’s not a fantastic distant future to which we have no relationship. We wanted to make it in the now.... Everything as geeks and fans we ask ourselves about giant monsters and kaiju I wanted to answer in the movie. We created a whole world around that one giant variable. This will not be a movie that has only spectacle and scope.
I'm a huge fan of Del Toro and his work, and if he's this excited about bringing us Pacific Rim I'm excited to see it. "Giant fucking monsters against giant fucking robots" under the direction of del Toro.... I'm in.
