SDCC 2011: SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN panel

Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman is the first of the numerous Snow White films to hold a panel at Comic-Con. I am excited to see the Tarsem Singh's untitled take as well, but this sounds like it has a lot of promise and a great cast.

The film is direted by first time feature film director Rupert Sanders (Halo 3, Call of Duty Black Ops and other commercials) and will star Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen, Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman. Filming is slated to begin in August, so there was not any footage shown for this panel.

The panelists include Rupert Sanders, producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Sam Claflin and Kristen Stewart.

The producers talked about their interest in hiring Rupert for the film. "We wanted to make the definitive version of the Snow White story and believe that the Brother's Grimm would be very proud of the film," accordinng to the producers.

Roth went on to talk about how he does not feel that it is a big deal that there are multiple Snow white films in the works. He said that people are interested in seeing films and believes that 10 weeks is a lifetime in Hollywood.

We got to see a reel of the commercials done by Sanders that really gaave a great look at his style of filmmakinng. Since the producers are planning to use a harder take on Snow White, I think his style wil be perfect to really immerse audiences.

Sanders revealed that he is excited to make a film on a giant scale and said that it will have epic battles. He is excited to play with the classic story pieces like the mirror, the apple and the witch. He said he wants to give "a visual and emotional ride and lose his cinematic virginity" on this film.

Kristen Stewart talked a bit about how she is excited to play Snow White and her character's "amazing ability to channel fear into energy." She calls Snow White "the people's leader" and says "she does not let her heart cloud her mind." She is excited about being able to use a sword on the film.

Although there was no footage, Sanders showed a mini featurette to give fans an idea of the tone of the "down and dirty" filmmaking. The footage was shot on a measley budget and was shot on the Disney backlot. It did look pretty damn cool and peaked my excitement for what is to come. It looks as though there will be a ton of cool action sequences for this film.

The panel went back and forth with some questions about their acting practices and it was cool to see the way they were interacting together, it looks as though there will be a lot of fun on the set. Then we got to see some photos of the cast in costume, which we will post as soon as we have them. They do an amazing job of setting the tone.

Charlize Theron then talked a bit about how she plans to portray the role of the villain in the film. She said that it was important to understand the background of the evil queen and said her past circumstances will be evil. She called her character as a serial killer. She also talked about how she thinks it is interesting she will be able to turn the character of the evil queen upside down and take it into new directions.

Snow White and the Huntsman arrives in theaters on June 1, 2012 and I am excited to see it on the big screen. This is not the Snow White we grew up with.
