Live-action NUTCRACKER in the works at Universal Pictures

Movie Universal Studios by

Universal Pictures has picked up a new pitch for The Nutcracker based on the classic tale of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. THR reports that the new take comes from John Mann and Jon Gunn and will be produced by Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark.

The project will be a live-action adventure movie. The story centers on "a 12-year-old girl who, with her brother and sister, receive gifts from their clockmaker-inventor godfather on Christmas Eve, one of which is a Nutcracker doll. That night, the girl begins an adventure that includes a war involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his army of mice, curses and themes of ugliness and beauty."

This project is the second known live-action Nutcracker project in development at a studio. New Line also has onne that is being written by Darren Lemke and produced by Temple Hill (Twilight Saga). This sounds like an interesting project. After seeing the Snow White panel and Comic-Con, which also has a lot more action, I am excited to see new takes on classic fairytales.
