OLDBOY Remake to Be Directed by Spike Lee?

Movie OldboySpike Lee by Joey Paur

Remember a couple years ago when Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were preparing to remake Park Chan Wook's Oldboy? Well, right about now I'm wishing that maybe it should have gone through. According to Twitch, the film project is ready to move forward, and Spike Lee is currently in talks to direct the remake. Spielberg and Smith are completely off the project.

I'm not the biggest fan of Spike Lee as a director, and I just don't know if he's got what it takes to tell this brutal tale of violence and revenge. If Lee ends up officially taking it on maybe he'll surprise me and make a great film. At one point after Mandate Pictures broke ties with DreamWorks, they tried to get Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass) and Danny Boyle (Sunshine) to direct the film as well, both of which are much better choices than Lee. Obviously those choices didn't work out either.

The movie is being written by Thor and I Am Legend screenwriter Mark Protosevich. I imagine the plan is still to use the comic book source material for the new film version of OldBoy.

What do you all think about Lee possibly directing this movie?

Here's a short synopsis for the story:

An average man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his imprisonment and get his revenge, Oh Dae-Su soon finds out that his kidnapper has a greater plan for him and is set onto a path of pain and suffering in an attempt to uncover the motive of his mysterious tormentor.
