Stephen King's THE STAND to be Directed by David Yates

Back in July it was reported that Harry Potter director David Yates was weighing in on the possibility of directing a big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand for Warner Bros. Now according to HitFix the studio is in the process of finalizing the deals for both Yates and his Harry Potter writing partner Steve Kloves to take on the epic story. As of right now the plan is to turn the story into a trilogy of films.

This would be the second adaptation of the novel, the first was a TV miniseries made in 1994 and starred Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. It was actually a really faithful adaptation that was told in four two hour episodes. I actually recently went back and watched it again, and even though I enjoyed it, I still think this story needs a proper big screen adaptation with a budget that will show off the actual scale of this story.

Yates and Kloves are a great team, and they proved their awesome talent with the Harry Potter films that they worked on. It would be great to see this film project get an R-rated treatment, after all the book is awesomely dark and disturbing. But, we all know that's not going to happen. Warner Bros. wants to turn this into a successful money making trilogy, which means they need a wider audience, which means these films will most likely end up being PG-13. I'll be shocked if they move forward with an R-rated film. Even with a PG-13 rating I think Yates will be able to still pull off a solidly dark and twisted film.

What do you all think about Yates and Kloves taking on this film project?
