Reeve Carney to Play Jeff Buckley in Biopic

Movie Casting by Joey Paur

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark star Reeve Carney is official on board to play Jeff Buckley in a new biopic being developed by Welcome to the Riley's director Jake Scott. I have no idea if Carney is a good actor or not, but I am looking forward to seeing this film. I'm a big fan of Buckley's music, and I think his life will make for a solid film.  Obviously so do a few filmmakers, as of right now there are two other Jeff Buckley biopics in the works. Greetings From Tim Buckley, which is being directed by Dan Algrant. This is the first film to go into production which starts a 4-week shoot Monday in Brooklyn. The other film is called A Pure Drop and it is being directed by Brendan Fletcher out of Australia. The film is based on A Pure Drop: The Life of Jeff Buckley.

Out of all of the projects in production Carney hopes that his film will end up being the definitive Jeff Buckley biopic, of course I think all of the other filmmakers are hoping the same thing. But this film project has a couple major things that the other films don't... Buckley's mother Mary Guibert is an executive producer on the project, and the have music rights to Buckley's songs, and the have exclusive rights to Buckley’s personal archives. The producers also also optioned the David Browne book Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley, as a resource from which Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker) wrote the script.

As for Carney being cast in the role Scott called him “the perfect combination of musical prodigy, impish charm, innate intelligence and sensitivity to play Jeff.” I guess only time will tell if he was the right choice.

Buckley was the son of folk musician Tim Buckley. He spent a decade as a guitarist-for-hire in Los Angeles, but eventually gained a following in the early 1990s by playing cover songs at venues in Manhattan's East Village, such as Sin-é, gradually focusing more on his own material. After rebuffing much interest from record labels and his father's manager Herb Cohen, he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace. He was a big influence on musicians such as Kurt Cobain and Coldplay.

According to reports, while he was waiting for the arrival of his band from New York, he drowned during a spontaneous evening swim, fully clothed, in Tennessee's Wolf River, he was caught in the wake of a passing boat and drowned.
