TOP GUN Getting a 3D Conversion

Director Tony Scott's classic 1986 Tom Cruise film Top Gun is set to get a 3D conversion for a theatrical re-released in early 2012. I guess we all knew this would eventually happen, and I'm sure we'll start seeing even more 3D conversions of other older classic film for theatrical re-releases.

A 4-minute preview of the converted 3D film was recently shown at the International Broadcasting Convention. The scene they showed off was the Danger Zone aerial flight sequence. There is no word on how it actually turned out, or what the audiences reaction was.

The 3D conversion is being done by Legend3D and the CEO Rob Hummel had this to say during the panel,

We think there is great potential for catalog titles in 3D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense.

As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I known they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward.

I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight. You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen.

I'll admit, Top Gun could probably be pretty cool as a 3D movie, it seems like a movie that would really work with it. All we can hope is that it gets a decent 3D conversion. What do you all think about Top Gun getting a 3D conversion and re-release?
