The Fox network has picked up a new drama series that will be based on the DC Comics superhero character The Spectre. The series has received a script commitment and will be written and produced by Brandon Camp (John Doe).

The character was created by Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily in the 1940's when he appeared in an issue of DC's More Fun Comics. The character has since blew up, and has become a very well known comic character. The story centers on a former cop serving time in afterlife limbo who hunts down earthly criminals on behalf of the dead — and mortals soon to be dead, if ultimate justice is not served.

I think The Spectre is a pretty cool character, and I think this comic would make for a fantastic TV series if it's done right. I can easily see how it could end up being a disappointment, but if they develop this series the right way, I think it could be a big hit. The character is just such a hardcore badass. What do you think?

Here's the Spectre's view on the world:

Saving this man is a waste of time. He would have been welcomed into God's kingdom, reunited with his father. While here in Italy, a boy rides his bike through the night and is struck dead by the driver. The murderer has been arrested, but that is not enough. He must feel his insides pop open as the boy's did. His rotten soul must be crushed like the boy's skull. The killer will taste the vengeance of the Spectre!

Here's more of a detailed run down of the character:

The Spectre is a cosmic entity and the physical embodiment of God's vengeance on Earth. Permanently bonded to a human soul, he uses his incredible divine powers to punish the truly wicked, usually ending his victim's lives in creative and ironic ways. His existence is in response to the failure of Eclipso, the spirit of God's wrath that turned completely malevolent and evil. Jim Corrigan, a member of theJustice Society of America during the Golden Age was the original Spectre and the most well-known. Hal Jordan, a fallen Green Lantern, took his place during Day of Judgment as a way of seeking redemption.Crispus Allen became the most recent Spectre at the end of the Day of Vengeance during Infinite CrisisThe Spectre was created by Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily, first appearing in More Fun Comics #52. (1940) Geoff Johns established Hal Jordan as the new Spectre in Day of Judgment #5. (1999) Crispus Allen became the most recent Spectre in Infinite Crisis #4. (2006)
