Weinstein picks up Sean Penn drama THIS MUST BE THE PLACE

Audiences will finally get to see Sean Penn in makeup thanks to the Weinstein Company, Deadline reports that the studio has acquired North American distribution rights to Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place. The film stars Penn as "a retired rock star who comes out of seclusion to continue the hunt for the ex-Nazi war criminal who humiliated his father, who has just died." Lucky Red, Indigo Film and Medusa Film produced the movie, which was an official selection at Cannes.

The film will likely be pushed for 2012 to allow for a possible Oscar bid. The Weinstein Company is currently focuesd on campaigns for The Artist and the Meryl Streep-starrer Iron Lady. Here is what Weinstein had to say about the purchase:

“Sorrentino is a true auteur. We were gripped by his film and are excited to share it with American audiences. Sean proves once again that he is one of the finest actors of our time.”
