Director Ti West Talks About "Junkie Hooker" Road Movie and Other Upcoming Horror Projects

Ti West's House of the Devil is a wonderful slow burn and left me reeling for days. His newest film The Innkeepers is currently on VOD and will arrive in theaters in February. West recently spoke to The Playlist about the various projects he has in the works.

His projects range from a vignette in an upcoming anthology called The ABCs of Horror to going into pre-production on The Side Effects, a sci-fi movie he describes as “pharmaceutical testing in space and paranoia.” West has also written a script for a Thelma and Lousie-style female road movie about junkie hookers and has been on the hunt for financing.

Here is what West had to say about the current Hollywood climate and what it was like to get backing for The Side Effects:

“When a movie like ‘Paranormal Activity’ is made for 30 grand and makes 150 million dollars, that’s all anyone wants to do anymore. So when I say, we need three and a half, four million dollars to make this movie, they’re like, how about you just make a found-footage movie for 50 grand? We can give you that. And I don’t want to do that. So it’s a weird time for indie movies, but I think we’ll get it made. But like I said, it takes a little longer.”

West does not hate found footage; he recently filmed a segment to V/H/S. The film is a found footage anthology, set to premiere at Sundance this year. What are your thoughts on West as a horror director? Are you looking forward to seeing his upcoming projects?
