George Lucas Says It's Really Possible to Survive the Nuked Fridge

I know for a fact I wasn't the only one who gleefully rolled my eyes in the theater when Indiana Jones was blown to hell by a nuclear bomb and survived by crawling into a fridge in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I still think that's ridiculous, and there's no way Indy would have survived that in real life, but Lucas stands by his decision and gives Indy a 50/50 chance at surviving the nuked fridge.

This little piece of information comes from they same New York Times article in which he says he will be retiring from blockbuster films. Here's what Lucas had to say,

When I [The New York Times writer] told Lucas that Spielberg had accepted the blame for nuking the fridge, he looked stunned. “It’s not true,” he said. “He’s trying to protect me."

In fact, it was Spielberg who “didn’t believe” the scene. In response to Spielberg’s fears, Lucas put together a whole nuking-the-fridge dossier. It was about six inches thick, he indicated with his hands. Lucas said that if the refrigerator were lead-lined, and if Indy didn’t break his neck when the fridge crashed to earth, and if he were able to get the door open, he could, in fact, survive. “The odds of surviving that refrigerator — from a lot of scientists — are about 50-50,” Lucas said.

I'm sorry, but as badass as Indiana Jones is I still don't think he could survive a nuclear bomb explosion by crawling into a fridge. But! as silly as it was, it was the most entertaining part of the film. I think Germain Lussier from /Film made a great point when he said...

He needed to prove that it was scientifically possible. George, you know what’s not scientifically possible? Spirits coming out of arks. Eternal life. Ripping someone’s heart out. Yet those things snuck in your movies. Maybe you should have spent more time thinking about a good story rather than proving fridge nuking was a feasible mode of transportation.

I concur... what are your thoughts?
