David Fincher Refuses To Cut THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO for India

Movie David Fincher by

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will have to do without money from India. THR reports that David Fincher has refused to make cuts specified by India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The CBFC requested that Fincher cut the following scenes: two lovemaking scenes between the film's principal female lead Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) and Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), a lesbian scene featuring Mara and a woman she meets at a bar, and a scene where Mara is raped and tortured. In a follow-up scene, she tortures her tormentor as a video of her being assaulted plays in the background.

Here is what Sony Pictures India had to say in a statement:

“Sony Pictures will not be releasing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in India. The Censor Board has adjudged the film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form and, while we are committed to maintaining and protecting the vision of the director, we will, as always, respect the guidelines set by the Board."

The CBFC stated that “the protocol usually is to blur out the scenes that have frontal nudity.” A Sony spokesperson stated that they were specifically asked that the scenes be cut and not blurred. I love Fincher's take on the story and think that it would be ridiculous to cut or even blur those scenes. Any alteration to the movie would be an alteration to the integrity of the story.
