Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN Back on Track!

There's a lot of Frankenstein movies in development right now, but the only one I'm interested in seeing get made is Guillermo del Toro's version. It's been a long time since we've had any update on it, but when STYD asked the director about it in a recent interview he responded with some great news!

[Universal Pictures Co-Chairman] Donna Langley just put us on track to write the screenplay. So, we’re going to start writing the script. It’s a very long endeavor for me; it’s going to require a couple of years just to write it. But it’s been put back on track by Donna.

Del toro went on to admit that he's been "avoiding it in a cowardly way for many years," and explains it's because it will be the most personal film he will ever make, and will be a faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel,

I’m being very faithful in that I’m trying to capture the spirit of the novel, when I read it as a kid, and how it impacted me. I recognize that it’s both biography and prophecy about my life. It’s a very personal film. In many ways it’s the most personal film I’ll ever make, because my connection with the creature is very profound and deep and I don’t think there’s any other monster that has affected me as much.

We may have to wait a couple of more years, but it's encouraging to hear that the movie is movie forward into the script writing phase. As a huge fan of both Del Toro and Frankenstein, I'm excited as hell to see how this film turns out! I have no doubt it will be a classically beautiful monster movie. Del Toro has also mentioned in the past that he wants Doug Jones to play the Monster, so hopefully that still happens as well, because it's perfect casting!
