There has been a bunch of debate on what villains The Avengers will face in Marvel's highly anticipated film. We have reported in the past rumors that the villains would be Skrulls or the Kree would be the villain, but according to director Joss Whedon that is not the case.
During the “A Conversation with Joss Whedon” at the SXSW, EW asked Whedon if he could share the identitify of the villains. He jokingly stated, “It’s the Vulcans,” and then went on to say:
“I don’t know a lot about the Marvel universe, and I thought there were Vulcans. I know we’re going to get a lot of emails about that one... I will say only this: It is not the Kree or the Skrulls.
Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories. They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars.
He went on to reveal that he did not want any fans to go into the film and be disappointed if they were expecting to se those villains:
The Skrulls — they can shape change. That’s a whole thing. I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow — it’s a real juggling act.
Here is what Whedon had to say about building limitations into the budget:
When you can have everything, everybody wants to give you everything, and then it’s very hard to make things feel real. To make things feel lived in. So we had to work hard at taking the big budget out of the movie. Too much Scrooge is not a good thing. We have to think more creatively about cutting the budget and limiting ourselves.
These statements should make any fan of the Marvel universe happy. While it would be cool to see the Kree or Skrulls face off against The Avengers, I am glad that Whedon is not trying to force so much into one film. What are your thoughts on this news? Who do you believe are the real villains in the film?
