SIN CITY 2 Will Finally Start Shooting this Year

While at South by Southwest, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez was on a panel in which he talked about a few projects that he's been developing and in the process revealed that Sin City 2 would start shooting this year. After 7 years, he's actually going to get this sequel into production. There have been tons of news and rumors surrounding this film over the years. He said that it would most likely start this summer after he's finished with Machete Kills, which he's shooting in April.

As far as casting for both movies goes, nothing is set in stone, but he revealed that he's been in discussions with potential stars that "will be of the same caliber and eclecticism as the first films, which featured Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Josh Hartnett, Don Johnson, and Steven Seagal."

Rodriguez also talked about his new Quickdraw Animation company that will be a separate entity from his Troublemaker Productions and will focus on creating CG animated feature films. The first two films he will be developing are Heavy Metal and a family film, which both have scripts and are headed to the storyboard preproduction phases. Rodriguez went on to explain "that he has found a way to streamline the animation process that will greatly shrink the amount of time it takes to produce one." He doesn't explain how he's going to do this, but "he will keep a core group of 6-8 animators in-house at his Austin-based Troublemaker Studios to mastermind all the story and visual elements before using sister companies to finish the animation."

The big question I have is... will the animation for these films be good? I've enjoyed about half of the films Rodriguez has made over the years, but the CG animation and effects he's used in his films have always looked cheap to me, and his family films have always sucked. It will be interesting to see what exactly he ends up coming up with.

What are your thoughts on Sin City 2 finally going into production, and this new animation studio that Rodriguez has created?
