Disney Expects To Lose $200 Million on JOHN CARTER

This is unfortunate news. Disney is expecting to lose 200 million freakin' dollars on their most recent box office flop John Carter. This is sad! John Carter actually ended up being an awesome film; I really enjoyed it. I would love to see the story continue on the big screen, but with a $200 million loss, I don't think that's going to happen. That sequel they were working on? Yeah, I don't think it will ever make it to the big screen.

I guess the loss was so bad that the studio had to release an official statement, which reads:

In light of the theatrical performance of John Carter ($184 million global box office), we expect the film to generate an operating loss of approximately $200 million during our second fiscal quarter ending March 31. As a result, our current expectation is that the Studio segment will have an operating loss of between $80 and $120 million for the second quarter. As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the upcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave, which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the Studio and the rest of the company.

Yes, The Avengers and Brave will do much much better and help soften the blow of this huge loss. If you're wondering why John Carter failed so miserably, it was because of the way it was marketed, and Disney insiders have been blaming the film's director Andrew Stanton for the failure, as he had full control and final say on how the movie was marketed. Stanton ended up making a solid movie that I enjoyed, unfortunately he should have left the marketing efforts to the people that knew what they were doing.

What did you think about John Carter, and did you think it would fail so hard?
