Red-Band Trailer of Seth MacFarlane's TED

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is making the leap from the small screen to the big screen in his new raunchy fantasy comedy, Ted. The film, which opens July 13th, stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Giovanni Ribisi, Jessica Stroup, Joel McHale, Patrick Warburton, Laura VandervoortRalph Garman and the voice of MacFarlane as the title character (which he portrayed through motion capture). This is MacFarlane's live-action directorial debut. Warning: Trailer is NSFW.

Mark Wahlberg plays John, a perfectly normal Boston native whose childhood wish for his teddy bear to come to life comes true. The bear, Ted (MacFarlane), remains his best friend well into his adult years. Conflict emerges when Ted's irresponsible and vulgar slacker lifestyle comes in the way of John's attempt to embrace his adulthood and the woman of his dreams, Lori (Mila Kunis).

I love the way the trailer opens without any hint as to what's coming, as if it's a typical romantic comedy (somebody took notes from the first Muppets teaser). The "F-you Thunder" song made me laugh. One problem I have is that Ted looks so generic. It's not an effects problem; it just looks like I could go out and find this teddy bear at a store and maybe that's the point, but I was expecting something a bit more anthromorphic. The voice is also kind of a let-down in that it's not MacFarlane trying something new - it sounds like a combo of his voice and Peter Griffin (which, of course, is also his voice). I think if it sounded more childlike a lot of the raunchy stuff he has to say would be a lot funnier. Anyway, I'm sure the movie will be really funny, but I question the business decision of having the movie open between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. Will you go see Seth MacFarlane's Ted?
