Disney's WRECK IT RALPH To Feature Classic Video Game Character Cameos

Disney Animation is currently developing an incredibly fun sounding film called Wreck It Ralph, which follows an old school video game arcade style bad guy named Ralph, who is a 9 foot tall, 640 pound character that lives in a pile of garbage. His job in the video game is to destroy cities that will only to be built back up again by the good guy with a magic hammer named Felix. Ralph is jealous of all the attention that Felix gets because he is the hero. Ralph goes on an adventure around the arcade he lives in, jumping from game to game looking for a way to prove that he can be a good guy and a hero. Of course, he just doesn't fit in with any of the games. Ralph isn’t content with his fate of being a villain. Some of the games he jumps in on are a Halo type video game and a game called Sugar Rush, which poses a threat to the arcade in which Ralph resides.

The film is a comedy adventure that is being directed by Rich Moore (The Simpsons) and will feature the voices of John C. ReillySarah SilvermanJack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch.

Because this world take place in a classic arcade with classic video games, it allows for the inclusion of some classic characters from these games. I was actually hoping we would see some well known video game characters in this movie. There was some footage of the film recently screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and thanks to our friends from /Film we have confirmation of some of the characters that make cameos in the film. Those characters include...

  • Bowser from Super Mario Bros.
  • Doctor Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Kano from Mortal Kombat
  • A Ghost from Pac-Man
  • Zangief from Street Fighter
  • Coily the Snake from Q*bert

I imagine we're going to see a many more characters in in the film, and it will be fun to see who they are. Hell, I'm surprised at that list of characters above! In a previous statement, the director said,

I love the idea of a very simple 8-bit video game character struggling with the complex question: ‘isn't there more to life than the role I've been assigned?’ In his quest for the answer, we journey with our hero through three visually distinct video game worlds. It's unlike anything anyone's seen before, and I'm thrilled to be to creating it here at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

I loved what I saw from this film at D23, and I'm excited about seeing the movie! What other video game characters do you hope to see in this movie?

Here's the official story synopsis:

Wreck-It Ralph (Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good GuyFix-It Felix (McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?
