TOP GUN 2 Is Inching Toward Production with Tom Cruise and Tony Scott

Movie Top Gun 2 by Joey Paur

The last thing we heard about this Top Gun sequel was that The Town screenwriter Peter Craig was going to be working on the script for the film. It sounds like things are coming along as the studio is looking to get Top Gun 2 into theaters before they end up doing another Mission: Impossible movie. Paramount film group president Adam Goodman recently did an interview with THR, and when asked about a new Mission: Impossible film he said,

We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct. All parties are moving ahead. We've hired Peter Craig to write the script.

This little statement says a lot. It basically confirms that the movie is definitely happening, Tom Cruise will be back to reprise his role, and Tony Scott is going to direct it. This is one of those movies I was never really sure about, but hearing this information come out of the mouth of the guy who knows what's actually going on tells me that this movie is really going to happen. It's just a matter of time.

I'm excited to see where they take the story and where Maverick is in his life. There's so much they can do with this world; it would be great to see it go in a direction that will make fans of the original film happy. Let's just hope they don't work a ridiculous alien invasion into the story. Here's what Cruise had to say about the film in a previous interview last year:

I hope we can figure this out to go do it again. If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.'

I take it they don't want to do any CGI jet fighter scenes. Hey, if they can do it with real jets again, why the hell not?! It'd be a lot cooler than using fake animated jet fighters.

What are your thoughts on a Top Gun sequel? Is this something you'd want to see? Do you think it would be better using CGI jets or real ones?
