Universal Planning to Reboot THE MUMMY Again

Universal Pictures is taking their classic Mummy franchise and rebooting the hell out of it again. The studio has hired Jon Spaiht to write the script for the film. He was one of the writers that worked on Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi film Prometheus. The producer of the Brendan Fraser films, Sean Daniels, will once again help in bringing The Mummy back to the big screen.

I didn't really care for Stephen Sommer's 1999 version of the film, but it was very successful, as was its two sequels. All together they brought in over a billion dollars, so of course the studio wants to get back in business with the living dead. The screenwriter has this to say about the project,

I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before.

I'd love to see a movie with an idea I've never seen before! But, it's the Mummy, we pretty much know what we're going to get. it will just be wrapped in a different packed. It's hard to tell if Spaiht being on this project is a good thing. He not only worked on Prometheus, but he also is writing World War Robot, and another untitled sci-fi script for producer Jerry Bruckheimer. He was also on Variety's list of top 10 screenwriters to watch in 2012. Unfortunately he also wrote that utterly awful alien invasion movie The Darkest Hour,

What do you think about The Mummy getting another reboot?
