George Lucas Moving Away from LucasFilm to Focus on Hobby Movies

George Lucas has recently started discussing his retirement, and he's been talking about making smaller experimental films for as long as I remember. Star Wars has always kept him from doing those things. So from what it sounds like Lucas is basically going to retire from LucasFilm so that he can work on some passion projects that he's got in his head. Retirement will give him the freedom he wants to start making films that we may never see.

In an upcoming interview with Empire Magazine Lucas confirms his plans saying....

I’m moving away from the company, I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies. I’ve always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres.

It actually sounds like he's going to go through with it. Only time will tell, but I really hope he follows through. He can finally get back to doing what he's always wanted to do before Star Wars took him on one crazy side track that led him to glorious fame and fortune.

At this point we just have to wonder how long it will be before he finishes all his obligations, because that could take years depending on how much he's got in the pipeline. We know that includes the Star Wars TV series and possibly a fifth Indiana Jones movie, I'm not sure if he's even fully committed to that movie though, as for the TV series he can delegate those responsibilities to someone else.

When he does start working on these experiemental film projects it would be nice to see what he does, but it doesn't sound like he'll be making an effort to get it out there. What do you think about Lucas retiring?
