STAR WARS CLONE WARS Director To Tackle POPEYE
Samurai Jack creator and Hotel Transylvania director Genndy Tartakovsky is officially attached to bring Popeye the sailor man to life on the big screen for Sony Pictures Animation.
This is a film that's been trying to get made for years, but with Tartakovsky on board, I'm sure it will actually gain some traction. I love the stuff Tartakovsky has worked on that also includes Star Wars: Clone Wars and Dexter's Laboratory. His first feature film, Hotel Transylvania, looks like it will be a lot of fun as well. The artist just has a cool style. He's also attached to direct a feature film version of Samurai Jack, and I hope that movie gets made before Popeye.
Avi and Ari Arad are producing the CGI 3D film with Sony Pictures Animation. David Ronn and Jay Scherick were attached to pen the script, which doesn't spark much confidence. These are the guys that wrote The Smurfs movies, Zookeeper, Norbit, and a few other insanely bad movies. It looks like Tartakovsky is Popeye's only hope of becoming a watchable film.
I grew up watching the Popeye cartoon, and there was a movie made in 1980 that was directed by Robert Altman and starred Robin Williams. I haven't seen the movie since I was a kid, but I remember I liked it a lot. I'm kind of scared to watch it now, because I'm afraid it will be utter crap.
Popeye was created by Elzie Crisler Segar back in 1929, and he would eat spinach to become super strong and beat the crap out of Brutus. His love interest was Olive Oyl and my favorite character was J. Wellington Wimpy who would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
Are you a fan of Popeye? What do you think of Tartakovsky taking on the challenge of bringing it to life? Can he save it from a bad script and story?
