JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie Moving Forward at Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. is finally moving forward with a Justice League movie. I bet the studio is kicking themself in the ass for not doing it sooner. As you can imagine, it was the epic success of The Avengers that finally got them rolling on it. Variety makes a point to say that the film "was more in anticipation of -- rather than a reaction to -- the box office success of The Avengers." I think we all know that's bullcrap though. The trade goes out of their way to make this point, and that makes me even more suspicious. Sure the studio has been talking about making it for years, but they didn't take any steps to get it into production until after The Avengers blew up.
Of course we know that DC Entertainment's Justice League movie will never live up to the standards set by The Avengers. Sorry DC fans, but it's true. Not unless they get one hell of a great director to take it on that knows what they're doing. They also need to keep comic writer Geoff Johns away from it. He's good at writing comics, but he doesn't know anything about making movies... look at what happened with Green Lantern, which he had a heavy hand in.
The studio has hired Gangster Squad screenwriter Will Beall to write the script for the Justice League adaptation. He's also written a few episodes of the TV series Castle. Gangster Squad looks like a great movie, but we still have yet to see how good the script is. I can't really make any judgements on Beall as I haven't really seen anything that he's written. Justice League is sure going to be one hell of a big project for him, and I hope he can pull it off. Beall is also writing a couple other films for the studio such as Lethal Weapon reboot and a remake of Logan's Run, which is expected to be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and will star Ryan Gosling.
Warner Bros originally tried to get a Justice League movie into production several years ago, with George Miller directing from a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney. It would have starred Adam Brody as the Flash, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, and Armie Hammer as Batman. The studio ended up pulling the plug on the project due to lack of tax breaks, and it was also during the writers strike.
Warner Bros. is also currently developing The Flash (for Greg Berlanti), Wonder Woman, Lobo, and Spy Vs. Spy, which Ron Howard might end up directing.
