Disney Remaking THE ROCKETEER

Ah, come on! Really? According to a recent report Disney plans on rebooting Joe Johnston's awesome 1991 classic The Rocketeer. Hell! I just got the Blu-ray version of the film not too long ago. I loved The Rocketeer, and it's sad that Disney has decided to do it all over again. At least the original will always be there for us fans to enjoy.

I just think it would benefit Disney to actually try and develop some original material. But they're obviously looking for some sure fire ways to make easy money, and remaking other films is a way of minimizing risk, because people are already familiar with it. The Rocketeer wasn't a very successful movie when it came out, but over the years it's gained a pretty big following. I always have to remind myself that the accountants run Hollywood, not the creative people. It all comes down to making money.

According to Vulture the studio will start meeting with various writers soon to come up with a new take on the movie. Personally I think it would be cool if they made a sequel to the movie instead. Why the hell not? I'm curious to see how this plays out. It's still in the very early stages, so who knows if anything will ever come of it. If they do move forward with it, their challenge will be to make it better than the original. If they don't out do the original, then who cares?

The story is set in the 1930's, and follows a young pilot who stumbles onto a prototype jetpack developed by Howard Hughes that allows him to become a high flying masked hero. Of course the Nazi's want it for themselves to help them take over the world.

I'm torn, by this news. I want to be excited about it, but I'm just not. Maybe the idea just needs to grow on me? What do you think about Disney wanting to remake The Rocketeer?
