AVATAR 2 - James Cameron Will Use Underwater Motion Capture
We already know that the Avatar sequels are going to revolve around the underwater universe that James Cameron has created for Pandora. I've been really curious to see just how Cameron was going to pull that off. According to producer Jon Landau it will include underwater performance capture. Here's what he said at the NAB Technology Summit...
We have kept a team of digital artists on from Avatar in order to test how we can create performance capture underwater. We could simulate water [in computer graphics] but we can't simulate the actor's experience so we are going to capture performance in a tank.
We want to take advantage of the technology that people are putting out there to make the next two movies more engaging and visually tantalizing, and wrap up the story arc of our two main characters.
It's going to be really cool to see how these next couple of Avatar sequels turn out. I'm sure they're going to look fantastic. Cameron has such a love for the ocean; this is probably going to be one of the best portrayals of an underwater world that we ever see.
