Mia Wasikowska to Join Guillermo del Toro's CRIMSON PEAK
Due to scheduling conflicts, Emma Stone had to drop out of Guillermo del Toro's haunted house horror thriller Crimson Peak. Luckily, it looks like he got another fantastic actress to replace her. Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska is in talks with Legendary Pictures to join the film.
Wasikowska is a very talented young actress. She was amazing in Park Chan-wook's Stoker, and I think she'd be great in this film. She might even be a better choice than Stone. Wasikowska will play a young author named Edith Cushing who "discovers that her charming new husband is not who he appears to be."
Hopefully she ends up jumping on board the project. If she does, she'll join the previously cast Charlie Hunnam, Benedict Cumberbatch, andJessica Chastain. I've been waiting for Del Toro to make another ghost story, and I'm excited to see what he's got planned for this.
The director previously described the movie as being a "very set-oriented, classical, but at the same time modern take on the ghost story." He also explained,
It’s the turn of the century. So it’s at the turn of the century and half of the movie takes place in America, and the other half takes place in a crumbling mansion in Cumbria. And basically it’s a ghost story and gothic romance, trying to subvert the rules of the usual gothic romance. It’s very much... the first half is a love story, then that love story turns darker. And it’s at the same time a ghost story. I’m working at this moment with Lucinda Clarkson who is a really great playwright from the UK. She has the proper degree of perversity and intelligence to turn it into something interesting to watch. It’s sort of a very compelling version of the classic gothic romance, where you have the spookiness and the windswept landscape that dooms the characters, you know?
The film starts production in February of 2014.
