Meryl Streep and Alexander Skarsgard to Join THE GIVER

Jeff Bridges' big screen adaptation of The Giver is in full casting mode. According to The Wrap, Meryl Streep has been cast in the film, and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) and Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) are in negotiations to join the project as well.

The film is based on the wonderfully fantastic book written by Lois Lowry, and the story is set in a "colorless dystopian society that enforces Sameness and fears freedom. All memory of human history has been erased, emotion does not exist, and citizens' professions are chosen for them."

Brenton Thwaites was previously cast as Jonas, the "community's Receiver of Memories who spends his days being mentored by the Giver (Bridges), who teaches him to confront and understand the lies that inform society. As Jonas comes to grips with living an unsheltered existence, he begins to acquire a taste for freedom and honesty, becoming an outcast in the process."

Streep is playing the community's Chief Elder, who maintains order in the seemingly utopian society. Skarsgard would play Jonas' father, and Monaghan will play Jonas' best friend, Asher.

This was such a great book, with a powerful story and message. Hopefully, director Philip Noyce will give it the great adaptation it deserves.
