20th Century Fox Rolls The Dice with a Remake of CLUE

Movie ClueRemake by Ben Pearson

If you're anything like me, you've spent hours playing the classic Parker Brothers board game Clue, but even more hours watching and cracking up at the cult classic 1985 film. (Check out Buzzfeed's outstanding oral history of the movie.) It's a terrific movie with an absolutely stellar cast and a crackerjack script that still holds up extremely well, a feat that's all the more impressive considering how a modern board game movie like Battleship failed so spectacularly. Hollywood and Hasbro have been itching to remake Clue for a while now, with Universal once hiring Gore Verbinski to direct a movie that took the board game setting and expanded it to a global stage. Now The Tracking Board reports that the movie is moving forward again, this time across town at 20th Century Fox.

It's unclear if Verbinski is still involved with this remake, and while story details are being kept under wraps, apparently Hasbro has retained the global scale of the script that was in development a few years ago.

I'm guessing there are plenty of our younger readers who may not have seen Clue, and I can't recommend it enough. It works in that perfect sweet spot of homage and actual entry into a genre, spoofing Agatha Christie-type murder mysteries but also delivering enough fun plot twists and memorable moments to work on that level itself. Obviously the script is vitally important here (as it is for every film), but casting for this one is going to be especially key for the studio to take the action global and try to turn this into a franchise. Head to the comments with your casting ideas for each of the main characters.

Here is the murderously funny movie based on the world-famous Clue board game. And now, with this special videocassette version, you can see all three surprise endings! Was it Colonel Mustard in the study with a gun? Miss Scarlet in the billiard room with the rope? Or was it Wadsworth the butler?
