3 TV Shows That Ran For Too Long
Just as a TV show can be canceled too soon, it can also be stretched out too long. This just makes the fans sick of the show and ruins the chance for new viewers to get into it. There’s always a nice balance that needs to be had such as in Avatar: The Last Airbender. For the story being told, three seasons was the perfect amount. What shows should have pulled the plug before they did?
3 – How I Met Your Mother
When I was first introduced to this show I thought it was hilarious. I literally stayed up all night watching the first season. I thought the characters were hilarious and the episodes told fun stories. Unfortunately, that magic died after about 7 seasons. By the time that the final season (season 9) came around I was ready to have Ted meet the mother of his children and then I was probably going to call it quits even if it kept going. Then they go and give me one of the worst series finales I have ever witnessed. In case you couldn’t tell, I was not a fan of how they ended the show. I would’ve been a lot more OK with it though if we hadn’t had the previous 2 seasons or so. The number one problem I had with the finale was that they spent so much time giving Barney some character development (about 2 or 3 seasons worth) and then in the finale, they just completely undid all of it. Not to mention we see the mother for about 2 episodes and no one really interacts with her. The creators had the ending planned out and even filmed it years before it aired, and while I like the idea of them knowing where the show has to go, I feel like they didn’t take that into consideration as they went to flesh out the later seasons.
2 – Once Upon a Time
I was late to this show. I started when they brought in the characters from Frozen. I then left when Emma became The Dark One. I got frustrated how in the short time I watched the show, they used amnesia at every turn to explain the plot. Characters just wouldn’t remember things because of a spell to create tension for the audience. I’ll let you in on a secret. Using the same plot device multiple times is annoying for the audience to watch and lazy writing. This show even had its primary cast leave before the final season. That’s never a good sign. This is a show that had some good first seasons (I’ve seen parts of the early seasons), but due to them not thinking things through, the show just felt like it dragged and was boring after watching for a season or 2.
1 – The Big Bang Theory
I used to love this show. I was a couple seasons late on this one, but I binged it like there was no tomorrow so that I could get caught up. I thought it was funny and I loved watching a show about geeks. I would also sing along to the opening every time. The problem? It just kept going. I watched the show for 9 seasons and it just got boring. I felt like they were relying on the same jokes with character development happening and then it being reverted to get a cheap laugh or to create some drama. You also throw in the fact that they were bringing some side characters in more and more and it just didn’t feel natural. It felt shoe-horned. This show is still going and I have a couple friends who still love this show, but for me, it hit its prime years ago. They could’ve ended the show after season 9 and it would’ve been pretty seamless. Howard and Bernadette were about to start a family, Amy and Sheldon were back together, and Leonard and Penny were having another wedding ceremony. Maybe add one more episode to show Leonard’s and Penny’s wedding ceremony.
