47 RONIN is Getting a Cyberpunk Sequel Set 300 Years in The Future!

The 2013 Keanu Reeves fantasy action martial arts film 47 Ronin is getting a sequel and while some of you may be inclined to roll your eyes, this sequel sounds like it’ll be pretty freakin’ rad.

The sequel will be set 300 years into the future in “an exotic cyberpunk world,” it will also reportedly “be a fresh, re-imagined take on the original feature and will incorporate horror along with modern samurai and ninja elements.”

The movie will be directed by Mulan actor Ron Yuan (Step Up China: Year for the Dance) and produced by Universal 1440, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Yuan said in a statement:

“I’m incredibly excited to be working with Universal and the producing team on this genre-blending, martial arts, action, horror and cyber-punk film. This will be a fun, intense, supercharged thrill ride for viewers globally.”

The original film was helmed by Carl Rinsch from a script written by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini. The film was based on Chūshingura and it tells the story of the 47 ronin, a real-life group of samurai in the 18th century who set out to avenge the death of their master who was killed by a merciless shogun.

I thought the first movie was cool, I enjoyed it! Based on the little that e know from the upcoming sequel, it sounds like it could be a blast. What do you all think about the concept?
