Last week was Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s 100th birthday, and in celebration of that, it was announced that Roddenberry Entertainment has been secretly working on a feature film biopic that will tell the story of the sci-fi TV icon.

The script for the film is being written by Adam Mazer, who wrote the 2010 HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack that starred Al Pacino as Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Star Trek caretakers Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth, who are executive producers on the current franchise shows are also set to produce.

Rod Roddenberry and Roth said in a statement, “Gene led a remarkable life. He was an incredibly complex, compelling man, whose work changed the face of television, and whose ideas changed the world. It’s time to share Gene’s story with audiences everywhere.”

Roddenberry went from being a fighter pilot to serving as LAPD cop to writing for TV. He survived two plane crashes and ended up creating Star Trek, one of the most believed sci-fi franchises of all time.

Roddenberry’s original Star Trek ran for three seasons on NBC. Before that, he worked on shows such as The Lieutenant and Wrangler. “Having fought with studios in the past over diversity in casting, the crew of the USS Enterprise reflected his inclusive worldview. It is a staple of the Star Trek Universe.” Roddenberry died in 1991.

The next step in the process of developing the biopic will be hiring a director and casting it. Who do you think should be cast as Gene Roddenberry?
