A BIOSHOCK Film Project Is in Development at Netflix

Netflix has announced that they will be producing a film adaptation of the hit video game franchise BioShock. The streaming service is partnering up with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to develop the project with Vertigo Entertainment (Doctor Sleep) producing.

There aren’t really any details that have been revealed, but the story for the film will most likely follow the events of the 2007 BioShock game.

There have been several attempts over the years to get a BioShock movie made, so it’s exciting that it’s finally going to happen! All of the other projects just never made it out of the development stage for one reason or another.

Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Ring) signed on to helm a Bioshock movie back in 2008, but that project was shut down due to concerns over its high budget and intended R-rating.

The screenwriter of the recent Mortal Kombat movie, Greg Russo, has been actively trying to get a film adaptation of BioShock into development. There’s no word on if he’s involved with this new project, though.

BioShock is set in Rapture, a large underwater city planned and constructed in the 1940s by individualist business magnate Andrew Ryan, who wanted to create a utopia for society's elite to flourish outside of government control and "petty morality."

The game has a heavy steampunk influence and because of that, the film is sure to make for a visually awesome film. We’ll have to wait and see how this turns out. Are you happy to learn that Netflix is developing a BioShock movie?
