A CHRISTMAS STORY Sequel in the Works with Peter Billingsley Reprising His Role as Ralphie
It was recently announced that Peter Billingsley will be teaming up with Legendary and Warner Bros. to bring us a sequel to the 1983 classic, dare I say masterpiece, A Christmas Story. Billingsley and Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Picture Show will be producing the film that is set to film in late February in Bulgaria. Bulgaria? Well, I guess we will roll with that one.
The movie will be directed by Clay Kaytis from a script that was written by Nick Schenk. Here is the synopsis we got from Deadline:
The film follows an adult Ralphie (Billingsley) in the 1970s, who returns to the house on Cleveland Street to deliver his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had growing up. With the same attention to real-life tone of the first, Ralphie reconnects with childhood friends, reconciles the passing of his Old Man and sews the seeds for the origins of the beloved holiday classic.
I guess Bulgaria will give that 1970’s feel they would be going for. Now, It has been confirmed that Julie Hagerty (Airplane) will be taking over the role of Ralphie’s mom. Given that Melinda Dillion is now in her 80s, Hagerty is a perfect replacement.
Where do we even begin with this? I was so blindsided by this news that I need to check and recheck the sources on this just to make sure it was real. To some A Christmas Story is the scourge of Christmas time, taking up a whole channel for 24 hours. To me, it is Christmas perfection. To have a true sequel brings more joy to my heart.
Crazy as it may seem, however, ACS is in my top ten all-time favorite movie list. The main reason for this is Darren McGavin’s portrayal of The Old Man. In my opinion, he is one of the most realistic characters ever brought to the big screen. I am pleased that they didn’t try to bring him back with someone trying to play a caricature of what he was. I hope they do The Old Man justice.
The movie should be hitting around Christmas time on HBO Max. Are you excited about this? Let us know what you think.
