A Parent TV Group Is Angry That Disney+ Is Adding the Netflix Marvel Series to Its Platform
Disney has always been a brand for families. From movies to TV, fans could always expect a certain rating and quality to their products. Now, with the expanded brands that Disney owns, their titles and properties have branched out, with some of them venturing into more adult-themed content like the Marvel titles. While most of us fans are pumped about the Netflix Marvel series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and The Defenders heading to Disney+, there is a group of people who are not so happy.
This week, the Parents Television and Media Council president Tim Winter took to the internet to post a statement from the organization’s members voicing their distaste of the streamer’s new content, stating:
"For more than 98 years, the Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with the words Family Friendly, and I can think of no other corporation in American history that has been built more squarely on the backs – and on the wallets – of parents and families. The company's eponymous platform Disney Plus logically marketed itself as a family-friendly streaming service, and parents have placed their trust in Disney to deliver just that.”
"It seems wildly 'off-brand' for Disney Plus to add TV-MA and R-rated programming to this platform, ostensibly to increase subscription revenue. So what comes next, adding live striptease performances in Fantasyland at Disney World?"
Well, that escalated quickly. Disney+ realized that this content was more mature than what they’ve made available in the past, so they created updated parental controls to coincide with the release that will continue to make family content available, with these new series out of reach for kiddos. That’s a great compromise. I can’t imagine having my biggest worry in life be monitoring the shows that streaming services add to their roster, then writing strange-sounding complaints about it. I wonder if that guy has also petitioned to ban dancing in his home town. He sounds like a good time.
For everyone else that’s excited about this addition, every season of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, The Defenders, and Agents of SHIELD will be available to watch on Disney+ on March 16th.
