A Direct Sequel To The Original CLOVERFIELD Movie is Now in Development
The J.J. Abrams-produced and Matt Reeves-directed 2008 film Cloverfield has spawned a fairly successful franchise. We’ve seen a couple of spinoff films made that were set in that alien creature filled universe. Those films include 10 Cloverfield Land and The Cloverfield Paradox, but now, after all these years, the original film that started it all is finally getting a direct sequel.
Abrams’ Bad Robot banner and Paramount Pictures have hired Joe Barton to write the script for the project. Barton is also currently the showrunner for HBO Max’s upcoming Batman-themed Gotham City Police Department crime series. Barton also worked on Invasion, which is an alien invasion movie that stars Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer.
The Cloverfield sequel will not be a found footage film like the first one, this will be a more traditional style film. Abrams will return to produce along with Bad Robot head of film, Hannah Minghella. Reeves is not involved in the project.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first Cloverfield movie. My favorite film in the franchise so far is 10 Cloverfield Lane. But, I’m curious to see what is being planned for the sequel. We don’t have any details to share with you regarding the plot, but it’s been 13 years since the original film was released in theaters, and I imagine the sequel will deal with the aftermath of the events of the first movie all these years later.
The film movie followed a group of 20-something New Yorkers as they try to survive in the city as a giant alien monster attacks it. The movie was made under-the-radar and it had a great viral marketing campaign to build interest.
What do you think about Cloverfield getting a direct sequel? Are you still even interested in the franchise?
