A Full Remake of STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II Is “On the Road Map” According to Lucasfilm Games

A legal dispute over canceled DLC for Aspyr’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II remaster has unexpectedly opened the door to something far more exciting.

Newly surfaced deposition details reveal that Lucasfilm Games has been quietly planning a full remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II with modern gameplay updates and, at long last, a fully realized ending.

According to Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, the team has been exploring a fully updated version of KOTOR II under the codename “Juliet.”

His deposition was referenced in a new Game File report and gives us the clearest explanation yet of what Lucasfilm Games envisioned.

Reilly explained: “Juliet was the code name for a project where we were going to do a full remake of KOTOR II with modern art, modern gameplay, you know, keep the story and the characters and the general—the general content of KOTOR II, but remake it for modern hardware and modern machines with updated graphics and all those kind of things. It was something we were discussing with Aspyr.”

That’s pretty exciting! A true ground up remake of KOTOR II with current generation gameplay and visuals is something fans have wanted for years especially considering the original game’s famously unfinished ending.

The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was announced in 2021 and quickly ran into development troubles at Aspyr. Reports at the time hinted it had moved to a Saber Interactive team though no one could confirm where it landed.

Reilly’s deposition finally clears that up. The project is now in development at Mad Head Games, the studio behind the upcoming Hellraiser: Revival.

Interestingly, Mad Head’s official site also mentions it is working on an “unannounced AAA game based on a famous and beloved IP,” which is obviously the KOTOR remake.

There has also been some chatter about a possible Old Republic related reveal arriving soon. Nothing confirmed yet but if there were ever a moment for this project to reappear, The Game Awards on December 11 would be an ideal stage.

When KOTOR II launched in 2004, many players immediately felt something was off. The ending hit abruptly and left several story threads unresolved.

Once modders dug into the game’s files, the truth became clear. Huge chunks of ending content along with other narrative elements had been cut due to intense time pressure on developer Obsidian.

The fan community eventually built the famous Restored Content Modification, which reinstated much of what had been removed. When Aspyr brought KOTOR II to Switch in 2022, it planned to release that restored content as DLC giving console players the definitive version for the first time.

That DLC was later canceled which triggered a false advertising lawsuit. The new report explains the likely reason for the cancellation. Disney’s lawyers were unsure whether they could fully secure the rights to the modders’ work and backed out.

Despite the shakeups and delays surrounding the first remake, the project isn’t dead. Reilly confirms it “is still technically on the road map” and that the legal issues affecting the canceled DLC won’t impact the remakes themselves.

He then added: “The plan was we would remake the content that was in the RCM as it relates to Star Wars in that Juliet project.”

If that plan survives, the remake of KOTOR II wouldn’t just modernize the game. It would finally deliver the complete narrative Obsidian wanted to release two decades ago.

As of now Lucasfilm Games hasn’t officially announced “Juliet,” but the deposition makes one thing clear. KOTOR is still very much part of their long term strategy and a fully rebuilt KOTOR II is absolutely being considered.

This is an exciting development!
