A GRAND THEFT AUTO-Inspired BREAKING BAD Video Game Was Once Pitched by Creator Vince Gilligan
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan had an idea for a Breaking Bad video game that he actually pitched at one point, and it would have been inspired by Grand Theft Auto.
During a recent interview on the Inside the Gilliverse podcast this past week, Gilligan talked about this idea saying: "I'm not much of a video game player, but how can you not know Grand Theft Auto?" He went on to explain:
"I remember saying to the guys, that are off running Apple now, who said yes originally to Breaking Bad, 'Who owns Grand Theft Auto? Can't you have a module, can there be a Breaking Bad [game]?' That never came to fruition. There have been quite a few attempts at video games, some of them kind of made it to market. We tried to do a VR experience with the Sony PlayStation VR headset. We did a mobile game that lasted for a little while."
The mobile game Gilligan refers to here is Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements. In it, players would build a drug empire under the guidance of Walter White and Jessie Pinkman. Apparently, the creative team behind Breaking Bad planned out several pitches for multiple video games based on the world of both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
It’s a shame nothing happened! A Grand Theft Auto-style Breaking Bad video game would have been awesome!
