A JOKER & HARLEY QUINN Movie Reportedly Being Written by WEAPONS Director Zack Cregger
Looks like chaos might be brewing in Gotham again. A new report suggests that a Joker and Harley Quinn movie could be on the horizon, and it might have some serious talent behind it.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Weapons and Barbarian director Zach Cregger has written a script for a Joker and Harley Quinn film, and he’s reportedly planning to pitch it to James Gunn.
For now, it’s important to note this is just a rumor, there’s been no official word from DC Studios or Warner Bros. about the project. Still, the idea has fans curious because it could mark a major new chapter for the DC Universe.
Cregger has previously teased that he’s dabbled in Gotham before. Back in 2022, he previously said:
“There are conversations about existing I.P. franchises that I can’t talk about, and then there’s a script I wrote before Barbarian that takes place, um, in Gotham City. And, uh, I actually love… I think that’s my favorite thing I’ve written believe it or not, so I don’t know what’s gonna happen with that. Nobody from Warner Bros. or DC. I have not talked to anybody about it. I hope to one day.”
If this script is the same one he mentioned, then Cregger has been holding onto this idea for a while. But will it fit into Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU? That’s the big question.
So far, the new DC Universe officially kicked off in December 2024 with Creature Commandos, followed by Gunn’s Superman. Peacemaker Season 2 is dropping next month, and in 2026 we’ll see Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface hit the screen.
Interestingly, Gunn admitted that a Clayface movie wasn’t even on their radar until Mike Flanagan pitched a script, so there’s precedent for plans changing when the right story comes along.
Even if this rumor turns out to be true and DC Studios greenlights the project, there’s no guarantee it will be part of the main DCU. Gunn has made it clear he’s open to Elseworlds stories, separate universes like Matt Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga. So, this Joker and Harley Quinn movie could end up in the DCU, Reeves’ universe, or stand entirely on its own.
For now, nothing is official, but the thought of a Joker and Harley Quinn story from the mind behind Barbarian is very interesting. Would you want to see this movie become part of the DCU, or should it exist in its own corner of Gotham?
