A Killer AI Doll Attacks in New Clip From M3GAN and James Wan Defends Its PG-13 Rating
Universal Pictures has released a new clip from Blumhouse’s upcoming horror thriller M3GAN and it features the evil AI robot doll attacking a bully and ripping one of his ears off. It looks like that would be pretty damn painful, to have your ear ripped off.
Also, apparently, a lot of people are complaining that M3GAN has a PG-13 rating. The horror fans wanted it to be rated R, but producer James Wan is defending the rating, telling THR:
“Listen, I’ve done PG-13 films, and I’ve done R-rated films. So I think it’s about whatever is most suitable for the film, and even though M3GAN is a scary movie, teenagers will really dig this. They’ll really like it, and I think it will speak to them in a big way.”
Producer Jason Blum added:
“Some of the scariest movies of all time are PG-13, so I don’t put too much stock in the bellyaching. Go see the movie, and then tell me about it.”
The film is directed by Gerard Johnstone, who directed the Australian horror movie Housebound, and the script comes from Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2). Here’s the synopsis:
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
Allison Williams (Get Out, The Perfection) both stars in and executive produces the movie. The film also stars Ronny Chieng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps (Cowboy Bebop), Lori Dungey (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, extended edition), and Stephane Garneau-Monten (Straight Forward).
The movie is set to be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.
