A KING KONG Broadway Musical is Coming to New York in 2018

King Kong is going to attack New York in a way we've never seen before! He will be invading the city as a Broadway musical! The King Kong musical production was developed by an Australian animatronics company and its only previous production was in Melbourne. The musical was written by Jack Thorne, who is the same guy who helped write Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Apparently, this isn't going to be a traditional musical, even though it's a stage production with a musical score and songs. The show has been described as “a contemporary take on the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast,” and it features a 20-foot animatronic King Kong puppet that is controlled by "automation, infrared technology, and multiple human performers”.

The musical was originally supposed to come to Broadway in 2014 but it was delayed so that they could tighten up the story and make it better. They wanted it to be more than just a visual extravaganza.

The script for the play is said to be "based on the novel of the original 1933 screenplay," which is kinda cool because I'm such a huge fan of the original film. I'm excited and curious to see how this turns out. One thing we won't be seeing, though, is King Kong singing and dancing. That's probably for the best.

King Kong will open in the fall of 2018 at the Broadway Theatre. I included a video below showing some of the pre-visualization work that was done for the production. Looks pretty cool!

Stage Technologies teams in the UK, the US and Australia, working closely with Global Creature Technology (the producers of the show), provided the ground-breaking automation system which controls the eponymous ape, after being contracted by Production Resource Group, L.L.C., (PRG).
