A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS Showrunner Teases the New Faces Arriving in Season 2
While fans are gearing up for more fire, chaos, and Targaryen family drama when House of the Dragon returns this June, a huge chunk of the Westeros fandom is still thinking about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The first season wrapped earlier this year and left viewers wanting more of Dunk and Egg wandering through the Seven Kingdoms getting tangled up in trouble.
Thankfully, season two is officially on the way, even after production hit weather-related delays. HBO has already announced several major cast additions, and now showrunner Ira Parker is opening up a little more about the characters who’ll shape Dunk’s next adventure.
Fans of George R.R. Martin’s The Sworn Sword already know what kind of storm is coming with Lady Rohanne Webber, better known as the Red Widow. She’ll be played by Lucy Boynton, while Peter Mullan steps into the role of Ser Eustace Osgrey and Babou Ceesay takes on Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield.
According to Parker, Lady Rohanne is going to throw Dunk completely off balance in ways a sword fight never could.
“She has a way of making Dunk uncomfortable, which is very good for us,” Parker said to Entertainment Weekly about Lady Rohanne. “Some of our other characters on season one did that very well, and that’s what we need from the Red Widow for a variety of reasons.
“This is essentially Dunk wading into politics. Maybe he’s gotten pretty good with a sword and pretty good riding a horse and being a sword for hire, but not so good at talking to highborn ladies or politicking in general. So somebody who can make him feel back-footed is gonna lead to good situations for us.”
That dynamic feels like a perfect fit for the series. One of the best things about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is how different it feels from the larger-scale HBO Westeros shows.
Dunk isn’t navigating giant dragon wars or fighting for the Iron Throne. He’s a good-hearted hedge knight trying to survive situations that are often way above his station, and watching him stumble through noble politics is part of the fun.
Parker stayed more guarded when talking about Ser Eustace Osgrey, though Mullan already feels like inspired casting for the aging and prideful lord of House Osgrey. But he had plenty to say about Ceesay’s version of Ser Bennis.
“He’s given us a really full, interesting Ser Bennis,” Parker told EW. “He’s a good foil to Dunk and also to Egg, which you’re always looking for. He has, I don’t know, just this way of making sense. Even in saying bad things, you sort of want him to be your friend.”
What makes A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms so refreshing is its smaller scale and personality-driven storytelling. The stakes may not involve entire kingdoms exploding into war, but the characters feel incredibly grounded and human. Season 2 looks like it’s leaning even harder into that strength.
Unfortunately, fans still have a wait ahead of them. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two is currently set to premiere in 2027.
