A MAD HATTER Animated Movie Is in the Works From THE GRINCH Co-Director Scott Mosier

Fans of Lewis Carroll's wonderfully weird Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are about to spend a lot more time in Wonderland.

One of the story's most memorable characters, the tea-loving, riddle-spouting Mad Hatter, is finally getting a movie all his own, and it sounds like Amazon MGM Studios is ready to let him step out of Alice's shadow.

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios is developing an animated Mad Hatter movie with Scott Mosier attached to write the adaptation.

While many fans know Mosier as a longtime collaborator of Kevin Smith, animation fans will recognize him as the co-director of Illumination’s The Grinch (2018).

At the moment, the studio is keeping things under wraps, so there's no word on what direction the story will take. It could explore the Hatter's origins, revisit the events of Alice in Wonderland from his perspective, or even pick up after Alice's unforgettable visit to the famous tea party.

The Mad Hatter has always stood out as one of Wonderland's most entertaining and unpredictable personalities. His endless riddles, bizarre conversations, and legendary tea party have made him one of the most recognizable characters from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, even though he's technically a supporting player.

Giving him the spotlight feels like a natural next step, especially when so many classic literary characters are getting expanded stories of their own.

Of course, this won't be the first time audiences have returned to Wonderland. Carroll's beloved novel has inspired countless adaptations across film and television over the decades, each putting its own spin on the strange fantasy adventure. Another new version is already on the way as well, with a musical adaptation currently in development starring Sabrina Carpenter.

Johnny Depp played the character in Tim Burton's 2010 live-action Alice in Wonderland. That interpretation became one of the character's most recognizable modern portrayals, making this upcoming animated film an opportunity to introduce a fresh version of the eccentric tea party host to a new generation.

There's still plenty we don't know about the project, including its cast, animation style, or release window, but the idea of an animated adventure centered on one of Wonderland's most delightfully odd characters is certainly intriguing.

If Mosier can bring the same charm, heart, and weirdness of the story, this could end up being a fun new trip down the rabbit hole for audiences of all ages.
