A New DOCTOR WHO Spinoff Series Is Currently in the Works and We Have Details!
Not long ago, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies teased that there were more Doctor Who spinoff shows coming, and now we’ve learned details of one that is currently in development.
The first of the new spinoffs will put a focus on the military research organization UNIT, which has appeared various times in the franchise since 1968. That series will star Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, who has appeared in 10 episodes of Doctor Who since 2012. The spinoff will focus on Stewart running the organization.
The character also may appear in the Doctor Who Christmas special later this year alongside the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. David Tennant and Catherine Tate are also set to feature in three Doctor Who 60th-anniversary specials.
When previously talking about his spinoff plans, Davies said: "So I thought — with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC's measures — it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who. I thought the streaming platforms are ready, the spin-offs are ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin-off. Those spin-offs declined when I left, and I can see why. And I very much left after 2008, when the money became scarce, I think that's fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things."
Davies has been hoping to build the Doctor Who franchise up in the way that Marvel has done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has big goals and big aspirations, and it would be interesting and cool if he managed to actually pull it off!
He previously attempted it when he rebooted Doctor Who in 2005 with spinoffs of Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Chronicles. He previously explained: "I was in the middle of running an empire, and my god I did that 10 years too soon, didn't I?"
He continued saying: "There should be a Doctor Who channel now. You look at those Disney announcements, of all those new Star Wars and Marvel shows, you think, we should be sitting here announcing The Nyssa Adventures or The Return of Donna Noble, and you should have the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors together in a 10-part series. Genuinely. You laugh, but did Star Trek fans ever think they'd be getting a Captain Pike series? Ever? That's insane. The whole science fiction world is so creative and so money-making right now, I think your wildest dreams can come true."
So now he’s going to give it a shot and with Disney now backing him, he has the means to do it.
