A New Film Production Studio Will Be Built... in Space
With the Russians shooting a movie in space and Tom Cruise prepping to shoot his own movie in space with director Doug Liman, I guess that means the future of film production is in space.
Space Entertainment Enterprise has announced that they will be co-producing Cruise’s space film project, and they propose to build an arena production studio in space. It will be a place for filmmakers to shoot movies and shows like this in zero gravity.
Obviously, this is an ambitious undertaking that isn’t going to be easy. The construction alone is craz,y and it would also be insanely expensive. Then there’s the whole aspect of launching actors, directors, and crew members up there to shoot their projects, which won’t be cheap for the studios. I’ll be honest, while this is kind of cool, it’s also absolutely ridiculous and impractical.
SEE-1 is hoping that the whole cool factor outweighs all of the hurdles. Axiom Space will handle construction as they helped build the commercial elements of the International Space Station. For the first four years of its existence, the studio will be attached to the ISS. The plan is then to break off from ISS and become its own structure in 2028.
SEE founders Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky are currently trying to raise the money to make this happen. They said in a statement:
"SEE-1 is an incredible opportunity for humanity to move into a different realm and start an exciting new chapter in space. It will provide a unique, and accessible home for boundless entertainment possibilities in a venue packed with innovative infrastructure which will unleash a new world of creativity. With worldwide leader Axiom Space building this cutting-edge, revolutionary facility, SEE-1 will provide not only the first, but also the supreme quality space structure enabling the expansion of the two trillion-dollar global entertainment industry into low-Earth orbit."
Michael Suffredini, president/CEO of Axiom Space added:
"Axiom Station, the world's first commercial space station, is designed as the foundational infrastructure enabling a diverse economy in orbit. Adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station's commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station's utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers."
Axiom chief engineer Dr. Michael Baine claimed went on to say:
"SEE-1 will showcase and leverage the space environment in an unprecedented way. The inflatable module design provides for around six meters diameter of unobstructed pressurized volume, which can be adapted to a range of activities — including an onboard state-of-the-art media production capability that will capture and convey the experience of weightlessness with breathtaking impact."
It would be crazy if they actually pulled this offer and made it a reality. What do you all think about a movie studio being shot in space?
