A New GHOSTBUSTERS Sequel Set in the Original Universe Is Being Directed by Jason Reitman
I’ve got some big exciting news for all of you fans of the original Ghostbusters films! Sony Pictures is developing a sequel that will be set in the original universe! Yes, it will be a continuation of the 1984 film Ghostbusters 2 and will in no way be connected to the 2016 film.
To make things even better, Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno, Tully) will direct the film from a script that he will co-write with Gil Kenan. Jason is also the son of the original franchise director Ivan Reitman, who, as you might imagine, will be producing.
There’s no word on whether any members of the original cast will return to the franchise, but I really hope to see Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver return in some capacity! You’d think that some of them would have to if this is considered a continuation of the original films.
There are no story details, but Variety says Reitman has already started testing teenagers for four mystery roles. The movie is said to end up passing the torch to a new, younger generation of Ghostbusters.
With the rise of popularity of the ghost hunting shows on TV, it wouldn’t be too hard to think that maybe this sequel could play with that kind of concept in the film. We’ll just have to wait to see.
Anyway, I’m excited about this! This is the Ghostbusters film that I’ve been hoping for, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. What do you all think?
