A New HELLBOY Reboot Reportedly in Development with GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Co-Director Brian Taylor
It’s been three years since David Harbour’s Hellboy reboot was released. That movie ended up being a big dud at the box office, and I have yet to meet anyone who actually liked the movie. Well, according to Discussing Film, Millennium Media is already developing a new Hellboy movie, and Crank, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and Gamer co-director Brian Taylor is said to be directing it.
The movie is being developed under the temporary title Hellboy: The Crooked Man, and casting is already underway. There actually could be a new Hellboy casting announcement in the next few weeks. The movie could go into production as soon as April, so it sounds like things are moving along pretty quickly.
The title of the movie is taken directly from the comics. In the story, written by creator Mike Mignola with art by the late Richard Corben, Hellboy goes to Virginia in the 1950s to face off with some witches, and while he’s on his journey, over the course of the story, he stumbles upon The Crooked Man. Mignola and horror/fantasy author Christopher Golden will be receiving story credits on this new film.
The description for the comic reads:
In 1956, somewhere in the mountains of West Virginia, Hellboy encounters Tom, a man who in his youth sold his soul to a backwoods demon known as the Crooked Man. Together they travel back into the dark heart of the Appalachian mountains to confront that demon and see if Tom's soul can't be saved. The three-issue series reunites Mignola and legendary horror artist Richard Corben (The Bodyssey, Banner, Punisher: The End, Hellboy: Makoma) in a tale of witchcraft rooted in Appalachian folklore.
This story would actually make a great standalone Hellboy movie… if it’s done right. The question is… is Brian Taylor the right director for the job? He has a distinct super high-energy storytelling style, not sure if that will translate well to the Hellboy franchise, but maybe he has something different planned. We’ll just have to wait and see!
I just want to be clear that this is a new Hellboy film is expected to be another reboot, so Ron Perlman and David Harbour will not be reprising their roles. What do you think about Hellboy getting a new reboot?
